Since its resorts began procreating in the 1930s and 1940s, Phoenix has evolved many high style clothiers and leisure-wear boutiques.

But long time before that, Western clothes predominated fashion here -- blue jean* and boots, cotton shirts and dresses, 10-gallon hats, and bolas (the state's official neckwear).

In many places round town, they still do. On-the-spot as well were the artworks of the Southwest's real indigenes -- Navaho weavers, sand painters, and silver-workers; Hopi weavers and katsina-doll carvers; Pima and Tohono O'odham (Papago) basketweavers and ceramists; and more.

Inspired by the area lush cultural customs, current artists have boomed here, getting capital of Arizona -- especially Scottsdale, a metropolis with more galleries than filling station* -- one of the Southwest's largest art centers (beside Santa Fe, New Mexico). Today's shoppers find the best of the old and the new -- all demonstrated with Southwestern style. Upmarket storehouses, one-of-a-kind shops, and outlet malls sell the newest styles, cowboy collectables, hand-crafted carpets, conventional Mexican folk art, and contemporary greenish blue jewellery. Most of the Valley's power shopping is concentrated in central Phoenix, downtown Scottsdale, and the Kierland area in North Scottsdale but auctions and antiques shops cluster in odd places -- and as treasure hunters know, you have always acquired to keep your eyes open.
